Square Enix Wants A Majority Of QA Done By Gen AI

We already know Square Enix is pretty friendly towards generative AI, having used it in their since-abandoned live service, Foamstars. But, it seems they want gen AI to handle basically its entire QA and debugging department by the end of 2027.

Within their medium-term business plan, they shared that they’re working with the University of Tokyo to improve “the efficiency of game development processes through AI technologies” with the end goal being to “automate 70% of QA and debugging tasks in game development by the end of 2027.”

This will no doubt cause a bit of a ruckus not just from in-the-know consumers but also likely people part of the very departments that are already not well-respected within development, like QA, despite being overall vital for releasing quality games.

The introduction of AI shouldn’t be too surprising, after all, beyond Square Enix’s use in Foamstars, just last month Krafton, known for PUBG and the revival of Hi-Fi Rush developer, Tango GameWorks, spent about $70 million to become an AI-first company.
