Yeah, yeah, it’s weird for us to be covering Xbox stuff, but to be fair this could affect PlayStation… if they didn’t plan ahead, that is. It sounds like Xbox will be hiking up its console prices once again following reported increases in DRAM prices.
Moore’s Law is Dead asserts that a deal between Samsung and SK to supply OpenAI “with nearly half of the world’s DRAM output” resulted in lacking DRAM for companies that haven’t prepared with a stockpile of components in trouble.
Sony apparently has skirted the issue, supposedly stockpiling RAM before things got out of hand, based on what MLID claims. To be clear, though, this doesn’t mean they couldn’t decide to ramp up prices just because. Both platform makers have raises prices somewhat recently, but should Sony raise prices, it’s more likely to be due to scrapping more off their bottomline than whatever Xbox will come up with if they do bump their prices.
“Believe it or not, PlayStation, from what I’ve heard, Sony planned ahead, bought up gobs of RAM near the bottom of the pricing, and thus they should be fine for months. They have plenty of GDDR6. At least that’s what I’m told.”
