Battlefront: The Epitome Of The Casual Or Mainstream Game?

"Accessible." It's the new buzz word in an industry that's relying more and more on new, younger consumers, and a widening "casual" demographic.

Now, if you're following the feedback from gamers and reviews for the freshly released Star Wars: Battlefront , one wonders if this game isn't the exact epitome of "casual/mainstream."

Those who complain say it feels light, that it doesn't have the depth and customization of a normal multiplayer shooter (like Call of Duty or Destiny ). At the same time, there are many who like this accessibility, as it allows just about anyone – including die-hard "Star Wars" fans who aren't big gamers – to enjoy the game. This isn't merely a glimpse of the future; it's happening right now: Games that are specifically not designed for the core group, but rather created for a mass audience.

You kinda got this feeling after the beta test, right? The community was split on the result; some hated the very "light" nature of the game, saying it didn't feel worth $60 and was quite frankly a little light and even stripped-down when compared to other big multiplayer productions. But chances are, Battlefront will sell oodles of copies, which should prove to everyone exactly where the industry is at this point…and is it really a bad thing?

It's interesting because the game is great. But it will probably only be great for a little while because it does lack depth.

However it is going to be super accessible which is probably exactly what they wanted. It almost has to be because it has the Star Wars name. I've got the perfect example of a friend who doesn't do competitive mp at all. In fact he only played crucible in Destiny to get items. So this is going to be a new experience for him and he's all in. Because it's Star Wars.

not every game needs a campaign/sp mode. it just depends and i think battlefront can do without campaign because…..its star wars. everyone knows what happens so why replay it when battlefront isnt focused on story.

evolve was able to pull this off, but as mentioned in the article, how long will replay value last? i stopped playing evolve after destiny released and ever since i barely played the game bc i got over it and moved on.

tbh, im slowly starting to get bored of battlefront. i have played every single mp mode (thanks to the encouraging silver trophy) and theyre all fun in their own ways, but just doesnt stick for some reason. im gonna continue playing it through the weekend and prolly return it by thanksgiving. that should give me enough time to consider fallout4.

Not every game needs online multiplayer/online co-op. *cough Assassins Creed *cough, cough*. Not everyone wants to hear kids music in the background on there mic. Or people yelling at one another over mic.

Star Wars has one of the most interesting universes in which to create original, interesting stories with strong narratives. Knights of the Old Republic is proof enough of that.

So the idea that this doesn't need to have a single player because "hey it's Star Wars" doesn't make a lot of sense to me. If anything, it should have a single player campaign because hey, it's Star Wars.

Assuming it was their intention to create a single player game.

What surprises me is that people are only now after it's release upset there's no single player campaign with story… It was never going to have it, and they were clear about that.

I don't see how anyone can be upset when they've all along told us what they're going to make, then they do a great job at making exactly what they said they would.

Sour grapes after the fact is just strange to me.

Underdog – actually there was quite a bit of frustration from consumers when it was announced there was no campaign. Battlefront franchise has always had sp, and what this new one offers is far from what fans are used to. I think it's just magnified right now because it does lack depth to keep it rolling. Nothing seperates the experience and for $60 at least CoD blops 3, provides a 6 hour campaign. I'm just using that as an example.

I think it's a cop out to use any excuse that this game doesn't have sp. It absolutely should have. But that doesn't make it somehow not a quality experience. The game is great.

i completely agree that a star wars game should have some sort of single player/story mode. but when the intentions of battlefront is just focused on mp, why are people so butt hurt over this?

its like saying why cant cod and battlefield be more story/sp driven? its not gonna happen. those games are made primarily for mp.

so people being all butt hurt bc battlefront didnt have sp, im all of a sudden the bad guy for pointing out the obvious? people might as well boycott WoW and say why isnt there sp mode? why am i obligated to do pvp/pve.

its quite obvious that battlefront was made to go against cod and battlefield. ea is butt hurt that cod is such a cash cow, when battlefield doesnt have its hype, and destiny is up there. yes, i know battlefield is published by ea, but ea is looking for their real cash cow so they hoped a star wars styled mp would do the trick. hence; battlefront

I could be remembering it wrong, but I thought SWBF:2 on PS2 didn't have a campaign either?

Gonna pick it up today but it does seem from reading alot of reviews that it really could be lacking replayablity for a mp game.

There's an expansion or patch or something that's supposed to have one, but who knows how short/long good/bad it'll be?

I think they're focusing in on what a large majority of people who would want to play this game will play. The multiplayer. They didn't spend development time on other things to make it "complete". They just delivered what they did. It has it's own identity and does exactly what it's advertised to do. (And seems to have done it well, imo)

We can criticize and accept reviews scoring it low for not providing the things it never intended to provide in the first place, but I think that makes us huge hypocritical sacks of fluff since I'm pretty sure most of us have defended other games in the exact same boat.

yup it never intended to give us a singleplayer experience. Even the original games were just mp but you could play the same thing against bots. SWBF was always intended to be a online mp game.

But I'm sure that they would've made millions more $$$$ if they HAD included SP mode.. AKA "NO buy from me"

Just my 2 cents
