Oh, this holiday season is going to be absolutely epic .
I really can't remember the last time two direct competitors in the video game market released a console in the same year (possibly even in the same month, as could be the case with the PS4 and Xbox One). The new generation is gonna get started with a big ol' bang.
And I'm not here to tell you which system to buy. I'm not going to proclaim the PS4 to be superior just because I write for a PlayStation-oriented website. I'm just interested in seeing the insane console wars that are going to ignite after today. I'm tempted to just sit back with some popcorn for the rest of the year and watch the drama unfold. Adolescent, petty, biased, hostile; sure, it'll be all those things. And unfortunately, it'll all be a little embarrassing, as it always is.
But Sony and Microsoft have given gamers a golden opportunity to debate until they're blue in the face. Based on my brief overview, it seems like the two systems in question are quite similar from a hardware/architectural standpoint. If that's the case, and if the two consoles launch at about the same time, doesn't this mean there's very little incentive to purchase both? It'll all come down to the games, won't it? If the hardware is similar and the features are similar and the price is basically the same, won't the determining factor be the software? Honestly, if that is indeed the case, I'm gonna have to give the edge to the PS4.
But who knows? Microsoft promised "15 exclusives" in the first year, which doesn't sound like a ton but remember, the exclusive is a dying breed. And while Forza Motorsport 5 was the only confirmed exclusive for the Xbox One's launch, don't forget that Gran Turismo 6 will not be on the PS4 this year (although Yamauchi said a PS4 version was possible later). On the other hand, if the PS4 launches with Killzone: Shadow Fall , DriveClub , inFamous: Second Son and Knack , isn't that a decent lineup? And you have to expect more games to be announced at E3. Well, more games for both the PS4 and Xbox One, of course.
So yeah, it's going to be nuts. That's all I'll say.
