John LittleWith the likes of Uncharted, The Last of Us, Twisted Metal, Gran Turismo, and soon to be Horizon, it seems that Death Stranding is the next Sony property lined up for a TV adaption. However, it differs from the aforementioned adaptions because Death Stranding: Isolations will be an animated series.
This new series was announced as Hideo Kojima arrived at Disney originals content showcase in Hong Kong. This is especially interesting given that a live action adaption is already in the works from A24.
Hollywood Reporter notes that Tatayuki Sano, who previously directed the Gridman Universe, will be the show’s director. Concept art from Ilya Kuvshinov, who previously designed characters on Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 was also shown.
Kojima stated that the series will be “pretty mind blowing.” He noted that there was some things he wanted to do with the show that were only possible in animation. The series will also star completely new characters.
When asked about his motivation for making the series, Kojima stated that he wanted to share the Death Stranding universe with more people than just those who play video games. He also stated that he has partnered with Disney, and that they approached about it whilst they worked on a 2023 documentary entitled Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds. He also stated that he is a lifelong fan of Disney.
It was also announced that the series will use a 2D hand-drawn animation style. E&H Productions who previously handled Ninja Kamui, will be the studio working on the project.
Disney also released a brief synopsis of the series. It reads:
Set in the world of Death Stranding, Death Stranding Isolations (working title) will tell a completely new story, separate from that of the video games. The upcoming series will follow a young man and woman as they set out on an adventure.”
The series is currently set for a 2027 release.
