Angry Video Game Nerd 8-Bit Releases In October

The angriest gamer you’ve ever heard is gonna take you back to the past… in two months… again.

By way of the MIX Fall Game Showcase, the release date for Angry Video Game Nerd 8-bit has finally been announced. Developed by Mega Cat Studios and publisher Retroware, AVGN 8-bit has its release date set for Thursday October 23.

The ultimate nerd rage is back in Angry Video Game Nerd 8-bit, an all-new action platformer game set in the AVGN universe! Play as The Nerd and blast your way across a host of pixel art levels crawling with zombies, mechanical skeletons, ghoulish reapers, and more.

The trailer has the Nerd creator/actor himself James Rolfe narrating the whole way. AVGN 8-bit, previously revealed towards the beginning of this year, is a retro-styled 2D side-scroller where players will not only encounter familiar enemies, but will also feature live cutscenes that James teases to feel like playing a Nerd episode. In fact, the game was actually teased a few years earlier, in what became the last episode of the now-shuttered Cinemassacre Podcast.

As another quick sidenote, AVGN 8-bit was also promoted earlier this year at MAGfest 2025 shortly after the game’s reveal trailer was uploaded. James Rolfe presented a re-creation of the Nerd Room as a booth for fans to play an earlier build of the game. In addition to his real life dad making a guest appearance, James mentioned plans to have the Nerd Room booth return to some capacity for future conventions:

Angry Video Game Nerd 8-bit will not only be available for current gen consoles and PC (via Steam), but will also launch on an actual physical NES cartridge for classically trained gamers. Limited Run Games will continue being behind the game’s physical release, including the aforementioned cartridge release.

While you can, the AVGN 8-bit demo is still available to play on Steam. Also, Retroware continues offering the game’s free posters, available to order here.
