AI Won’t Replace The “Human Touch”

PlayStation boss Hermen Hulst addresses the ever-growing technology surrounding the controversial use of artificial intelligence in game development and the creative fields in general. While he does seem to have a slight soft spot for it, he isn’t convinced it could ever fully replace an entire human dev team.

Speaking with BBC, the PlayStation boss doesn’t dismiss AI altogether, believing it could revolutionize game development, somewhat echoing a sentiment similar to others that believe using AI could remove the remedial tasks that make the development pipeline run smoother.

“I suspect there will be a dual demand in gaming: one for AI-driven innovative experiences and another for handcrafted, thoughtful content. Striking the right balance between leveraging AI and preserving the human touch will be crucial.

Conversely, people who detest AI within game development feel it could be used to cut out jobs and make a technically inferior product. While we don’t think this is anything that will happen within the next few generations of gaming in the mainstream, it’s clear that at least while Hulst is in charge, we aren’t likely to see Sony booting humans in favor of technology.
