The year’s halfway done, but PlayStation5 players have plenty to look forward to. With critically acclaimed games like Fuga: Melodies of Steel 3 and Rematch already released, what else is in store for 2025?
Borderlands 4
The fourth game in a much-loved series, Borderlands, will be released September 12. Announced by 2K Games announced at Gamescom last year, it’s set in new alien worlds and will be available on Switch 2, as well as PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. The first trailer didn’t feature any real gameplay, but the second did. Then members of 2K’s development team showcased more footage in an 18-minute deep dive. Players will take the role of “a legendary Vault Hunter” and shoot enemies in search of treasures. Anthony Nicholson, senior project producer, has said the game will build on Borderland 2’s humor.
Ghost of Yotei
Ghost of Yotei is coming on October 2. The prequel, Ghost of Tsushima, received high praise from certain publications (9/10 from IGN and 9.5 from Game Informer), but other critics felt it lacked personality. Everyone agreed that it looked stunning, though. The Guardian writer Keza MacDonald called it “unimpeachably gorgeous” and enjoyed the depictions of Japan’s beauty, including its blue hydrangeas, red maples, fishing villages, and shrines.
Gears of War: Reloaded
A second remaster of the classic Gears of War (2006), this Reloaded edition will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. The previous update, Ultimate Edition, received positive reviews for its audio and visual improvements. Developers The Coalition will aim to avoid the slight technical issues that were present at that game’s launch (the Gnasher Shotgun didn’t reliably register damage and the PC release had some display problems).
The new title will be released August 26. As we reported in June, the game won’t be released on PS5 in Japan due to ratings restrictions.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater
Another remake is set to follow a couple of days later. Many PS2 players will have fond memories of the original. It was one of the most critically lauded games in the Metal Gear Solid games in the series, receiving a 9.6/10 from IGN. MGS2 introduced Raiden as the protagonist (who fans generally weren’t as keen on), before Snake Eater switched to Naked Snake, a similar character to the original series lead, Solid Snake.
Delta will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. The story will remain fundamentally the same, according to CBR, with “some gameplay tweaks” potentially added. Konami only released gameplay footage of the multiplayer mode in June, with not many details available yet.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles
Yet another reboot, Final Fantasy Tactics is coming September 30 (PS5, Xbox Series X/S/ PC, and Switch). GamesRadar reported director Yasumi Matsuno saying that the game would have four or five-character parties. Matsuno said 10-character parties (as in Tactics Ogre) would be too much, with the team working to hit 60fps. We gave the original Tactics a 9/10 score back in 1998, as did Edge magazine.
Further ahead
2026 may be another special year. While waiting for the next big PS5 announcement, some gamers turn to PC, or explore where to find new casinos for a change of pace.
For players who can wait until next year, Resident Evil Requiem is scheduled for release in February. Capcom recently announced that players will be able to switch between first and third-person perspectives.
There are several Marvel games in the works, but the most exciting may be Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, expected early next year. The game is set during WW2 and features Black Panther and Captain America. It was originally announced in 2021.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be released on a date to be confirmed. GamesRadar thought the trailer, in which a samurai carries the Oni Gauntlet, looked “incredible”.
Is GTA VI ever going to be released?
For Grand Theft Auto fans, 2025 just wasn’t meant to be. Rockstar Games eventually announced the highly anticipated game will be released May 26, 2026. The developers apologized for the delay and called the interest around the game “humbling”.
GTA VI may well be one of the most eagerly awaited games of all time. It has been in development since 2014 and was originally codenamed Project Americas. (To be fair to Rockstar, they released the similarly beloved Red Dead Redemption 2, as well as GTA Online, in the meantime.) Years of rumours and fan theories followed leaked development footage in 2022. The game is set in Leonida, based on Florida. Lucia Caminos will be a non-optional female protagonist, a first for the series. Caminos is one half of a criminal couple with Jason Duval, formerly of the army.
In the meantime, Red Dead Redemption 2 may see a PS5 update. The original received an exceptionally rare 10/10 score on IGN (deemed a “Masterpiece”). Reviewer Luke Reilly said it was “meticulously polished” and is one of the few games of the last two decades to be almost universally admired. You have to travel quite far on the internet to find any dissenting voices (but there are always some, of course). One of the less positive (but still not negative) reviews was from Slant Magazine, who said the game’s beauty harmed the desperation and hardship it was aiming to convey. That’s right – the game was too beautiful.
