During the Spike TV Video Game Awards, NetherRealm boss Ed Boon announced that his team was currently cranking on a project…and it wasn't called "Mortal Kombat."
Well, after the critical and financial success of this year's reboot , a lot of fighting fans were disappointed. They thought the studio was leaving MK behind and once again, an iconic franchise would go dormant.
But there's no need to cry yourselves to sleep. Boon tossed up a clarification on his Twitter page , much to the relief of all those fans threatening to slit their wrists:
"NetherRealm has a number of projects in the works. Not JUST Mortal Kombat. :)"
A little later, he responded directly to a fan by saying- "NetherRealm is working on MK and non-MK games!" It seems these guys have a few tricks up their sleeve, as Batman: Arkham City Lockdown is only the first surprise ont he list. As to the idea of a new MK powered by the Unreal Engine, Boon would only reply- "Hmmm…" See, Lockdown (for iOS) uses the Unreal Engine; that's why the question arose.
Wow, there are a lot of studios trying new things these days, aren't there? This industry sure feels healthy, doesn't it?
